Polycarbonate or Plexiglass?

Our greenhouse kits come with 6mm twin-walled polycarbonate window panels as the standard option. However, if you prefer a clear glass-like appearance, we also offer plexiglass sides as an alternative. While polycarbonate provides slightly better insulation value, plexiglass is widely appreciated for its aesthetic appeal. Additionally, we provide the option to customize a combination of both materials on your sidewalls, allowing you to create a greenhouse that suits your specific preferences.

Clear 6mm Twin-Walled Polycarbonate

The 6mm polycarbonate we provide are diffused, as shown in the accompanying photos.

  1. Virtually unbreakable: Our polycarbonate panels are a reliable alternative to glass, capable of withstanding storms, hailstones, wind, snowfalls, and ice.

  2. Manufacturer's warranty: Enjoy up to a 10-year warranty against breakage, yellowing, and loss of light transmission.

  3. Thermal insulation: Our panels utilize flute channels that trap air between the double walls, effectively retaining heat. This insulation keeps plants 10-20°F (21-36°C) warmer in winter, resulting in energy savings of up to 45% compared to heating a single-pane glass greenhouse.

  4. Insulative R-Value: Our standard 6mm polycarbonate panels offer an insulative R-Value of 1.68. The higher the value, the better the insulation.

  5. Lightweight: Our polycarbonate panels are extremely lightweight, making them easy to install.

  6. Privacy: The diffused appearance of the panels allows for privacy from neighbors or can be used to conceal fences and walls.

  7. Our panels provide 86% light transmission while protecting against UV rays. The ribbed design scatters sunlight between the panel walls, creating a gentle and even distribution of light for plants without harsh shadows or burns. With reduced condensation, you can expect improved light transmission and minimal to no dripping from overhead.

"I have the clear plexi-glass sidewalls which I love. I wanted a beautiful and functional GH that was also practical for my family. I have two boys that like to use the backyard to play sports and I didn't want a GH that they had to fear damaging from a stray ball, etc. We have had many wiffle balls and baseballs hit my GH and it was never damaged. I look forward to many happy years using my greenhouse" Sheila, Manchester, NH (8x12).

In the majority of cases, our standard polycarbonate is preferred for the greenhouse roof due to its insulation value and diffusion properties. With polycarbonate, you can expect 86% light transmission, providing diffused light on excessively hot days & protecting your plants from solar overexposure. While plexiglass can be used on the roof, similar to glass, it allows 100% light transmission. We offer the option to switch to plexiglass roofing as well.
